Importing Wellness Equipment into Indonesia: Duties, Permits and the Traps

The machine is the easy part. Between a Chinese factory floor and a Bali treatment room stands Indonesian customs — and the difference between a smooth import and a container stuck at Tanjung Priok is usually paperwork that had to be right before the ship left port. This guide covers what actually happens, whether you import yourself or pay someone like us to make it invisible.
What the import actually costs
On top of the ex-factory price, budget for sea or air freight, marine insurance, import duty (rates vary by HS code — most wellness equipment falls in the 5–10% band), 11% VAT calculated on the CIF-plus-duty value, plus port handling and customs brokerage. As a planning rule, import into Indonesia typically adds 30–50% on top of the factory price before any margin — which is exactly why our catalog quotes delivered prices instead of teaser FOB numbers.
The classification question
The single most consequential decision is the HS code. Equipment classified as medical devices can trigger registration requirements with Indonesia's Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) — a process designed for hospital equipment, not spa recovery tools. Most wellness machines (saunas, cold plunges, red light, compression) import cleanly as general or sports/wellness goods; pressure chambers and aesthetic energy devices need experienced classification. Get this wrong and the shipment waits at the port while storage fees run.

- Missing test reports or CE files → customs holds for documentation
- Under-declared value → red-lane inspection and penalties
- No local consignee with import licence (API) → cargo cannot clear at all
Air vs sea, and when each makes sense
Compact machines — analyzers, facial platforms, PEMF systems — fly economically: two to three weeks door-to-door and the freight premium is small against the machine's value. Anything heavy travels by sea: six to nine weeks door-to-door to Bali or Jakarta including clearance. The classic mistake is announcing an opening date off the factory's production time alone; always add the freight and clearance window before you print the invitations.
