How to choose a steam generator: volume, power and site checklist

Calculate the geometric room volume

Measure the finished internal dimensions, not the outside of the building. For example, 2 m × 2 m × 2.2 m = 8.8 m³. Record that value alongside the wall finish, glazing, insulation and planned usage.

The 8.8 m³ example is a starting measurement. It is not a recommendation for a 6, 9 or 12 kW generator. Manufacturers use their own sizing conditions; a model’s room range must be interpreted with those conditions.

Check four parts of the specification

First, match the generator’s room range to the actual materials and operating schedule. Second, verify voltage, phase and electrical demand. Third, list the compatible controller, sensor and steam outlet. Fourth, establish the required water quality and drain arrangement.

Where two models have similar power, choose between them by the documented duty, service access, maintenance procedure and local support. A nominal output comparison cannot answer those questions. For example, Harvia lists the HGX60 at 5.7 kW and 7.6 kg/h of steam. Electrical power and steam output describe different quantities; use the exact model’s sizing instructions.

Plan the service location before tiling

Mark an accessible location outside the bathing area according to the chosen manual. Show the steam pipe route and drain, and leave enough access to remove service parts. Check the manufacturer’s restrictions on pipe layout instead of designing the route around furniture first.

In a renovation, an apparently convenient cupboard may have no drain or insufficient ventilation. Discovering that before finishing work is much easier than reopening new tiles.

Create an itemised comparison

Use the same shopping list for every offer: generator, control, temperature sensor, steam outlet, any water treatment, drainage components and installation. Mark which items are included and which are separate. Ask who handles commissioning and later descaling.

Do not assume an aroma dosing system is included or that oils can be added directly to a generator. Only use accessories and substances permitted by the chosen system.

Questions to resolve before placing an order

Can the site provide the model’s electrical supply? Is the room construction included in the sizing calculation? Can the unit be removed for service? What water limits and cleaning intervals apply? Get these answers alongside the exact model code before accepting a final price.
