Steam room or dry sauna: choosing for a property in Indonesia

Two different room systems

A dry sauna normally combines timber lining, a stone heater and a planned air path. A steam room needs waterproof construction, ventilation and drying; its generator sits outside the bathing space. Pouring a little water on sauna stones does not make those constructions equivalent.

For a villa owner, the first decision is whether guests want a timber sauna experience or a humid tiled room. For a spa operator, the treatment menu and staffing matter as much as the visual design. Neither option should be selected on promised medical outcomes.

What changes in the building

The sauna brief includes insulation, timber, heater clearances, bench positions and ventilation. The steam-room brief includes waterproofing, a suitable ceiling, drainage, compatible finishes and a protected steam outlet. Both need an electrical design and accessible equipment.

An existing shower may seem the easy route to a steam room, but its ceiling, door seals and waterproof layer may not support repeated steam exposure. Photograph these details before asking for a conversion quotation.

A comparison for two common projects

Example A: a villa has a spare dry room and suitable electrical capacity, but no convenient drain. A dry sauna may require fewer wet-area changes, subject to the heater and ventilation design. Example B: a spa is already building a waterproof treatment area and wants a hammam ritual. A steam room with a treatment platform may fit the operating concept better.

These examples compare project constraints, not universal costs. A large glazed sauna or a stone-lined hammam can change the equipment requirement substantially.

What to compare in quotations

Ask each supplier to separate room construction, equipment, controls, electrical work, plumbing where relevant, installation and handover. Check cleaning instructions, wear parts and service access. A quote for a heater or generator alone is not comparable to a completed room.

For a commercial property, write down opening hours, expected guests and the time available between uses for cleaning. Use that schedule to check the equipment’s permitted operating duty.

Prepare a short brief

Send the city, photographs, internal length × width × height and the intended number of users. Mark the entrance, windows, services and access route. Add the desired experience: dry sauna, steam room or hammam with treatments. The next step is a layout and equipment specification for that room, followed by a complete price.
