Choosing a sauna heater in Indonesia: electric or wood-fired?

Electric and wood-fired: compare the whole installation

Electric heating avoids fuel loading and ash handling, but the site must support the selected heater’s supply and controls. Wood firing adds fuel storage, a chimney route, combustion air and fire protection. These are project requirements rather than optional accessories.

For a villa, compare daily convenience and who will operate the sauna. For a commercial site, also review staffing, opening hours and the manufacturer’s permitted operating schedule. Do not assume that any domestic heater is suitable for all-day public use.

Measure the room and identify heat-loss surfaces

Start with the finished length, width and height. A 2 × 2 × 2.1 m room measures 8.4 m³. Then list glazing, exposed masonry and other uninsulated surfaces. Use the selected manufacturer’s calculation method to adjust the sizing.

The example does not mean “buy 8.4 kW”. Room volume and rated heater output have different units. Check the exact model’s recommended room range, including the relevant construction assumptions.

Lay out the benches around the chosen heater

Reserve the documented distances to combustible materials, ceiling and benches. Include the protective guard where required and a comfortable access route. A larger stone capacity may also change loading weight, footprint and maintenance access.

For replacement, compare the old and new rating plates, control system and sensor requirements. Reusing a controller simply because the connector fits is not a valid compatibility check.

What belongs in the quotation

For an electric configuration, list the heater, stones, controller, sensor and electrical work. For a wood-fired system, also list the compatible chimney, roof penetration, protective construction and cleaning access. Separate these from room construction and finishes.

Choose stones by the heater manual. Decorative sauna stones may be limited to a top layer; ordinary ornamental rocks are not a substitute.

What to send for a selection

Provide the property location, room drawing, wall and ceiling materials, photographs and available electrical information. For wood firing, include roof photographs and the proposed chimney route. The final model and installation requirements can then be reviewed together.
