Saunas in a Tropical Climate: What Actually Works in Bali

Selling heat in a country that is already hot sounds absurd — until you see the queues for sauna sessions at Bali's beach clubs. Contrast therapy is booming here precisely because the cold plunge next door makes the heat meaningful. But the tropics punish equipment choices that would be fine in Europe. This is what survives, and what we stopped installing.
Infrared wins the tropics on physics
A traditional sauna heats air to 90 °C; an infrared cabin heats the body directly at 45–65 °C air temperature. In a tropical building that difference decides everything downstream: a 2.1 kW infrared cabin against 6–9 kW for a traditional stove, a session room that does not fight the air conditioning, and a cabin that assembles in two hours on a standard socket.
Traditional saunas absolutely have their place — resorts build them as signature experiences, and our construction division delivers them as projects. But for a studio, gym or villa adding heat therapy to a menu, the infrared cabin at about $4,700 delivered is the rational default.
Materials: humidity is the real enemy
Bali's 80% humidity attacks wood between sessions, not during them. Canadian hemlock and thermally treated aspen handle the cycle; cheap pine cabins swell, warp and grow mold within a year. Check the glass too — tempered doors with proper seals, or the cabin never holds temperature efficiently.

The formats that sell in Bali
Two-person infrared cabins are the volume format — small enough for a villa, professional enough for a studio menu. Sauna blankets ($420) cover the budget and rental end: villas offer them as in-room extras. Whichever format, pair it with cold. A sauna alone is a nice amenity; a sauna next to a plunge is a contrast ritual clients build weeks around — and the accessories kit ($170) finishes the experience properly.
